It is good to be together again! I know that the reactivation of my Fraternal life has made me a more whole man in a few short weeks. Before I get into my topic of choice for this post, I would just like to remind everyone about the upcoming Fall Province Weekend, 9/30/2011-10/2/2011 at West Chester University. Matt South and the Rho Sigma boys have put together a fantastic lineup for this meeting and I know I’m really excited to attend!

As you all know I’m encouraging a revival of the great writing tradition in our Fraternity. The words of Father Mills and Brother Burrell and many others still remain primary influences on our current Fraternal life, even a century or more after they were written. As we’ve regrouped with our chapters to continue our regular business as individual entities, I am reminded of some of the hardest parts of my Fraternal life.

Tonight my chapter discussed by-law changes, Article by Article, Section by Section. It is not easy, it is not fun, and nobody really enjoys taking all that time and being frustrated throughout it. Let’s face it, it’s probably the most annoying thing I’ve done as a brother. Nobody can agree right away, people get passionate about things, it’s difficult to remember what’s being discussed- it’s a mess!

There is no doubt the power that our Fraternity exerts on our hearts. We can nearly taste the joy in the air during our ceremonies and our Ritual. We look back fondly on all the times we’ve met brothers from different colleges, different states, sometimes from the other side of the country. Seeing the letters Phi Mu Alpha proudly worn by a stranger and knowing that that stranger and I are bound together by the bonds of brotherhood makes me want to dance for joy!

It is not these times that are most difficult for us, but rather the times where we are not being constantly reminded of the joys our brotherhood brings. It is when Brother Joe Sinfonian from across the room won’t stop arguing about a semicolon, about when Brother John Sinfonian walks out of the meeting in frustration with his companions that make us question why we devote our time to the mundane while gathered together and not spend every second talking about and experiencing the spectacular.

The hard reality is that our organization cannot run efficiently without order and regulations, and cannot be recognized without doing proper paperwork, budgeting, etc. The next time you become John Sinfonian and want to leave the room because you’re frustrated with some of your chapter brothers, remember that by-law revisions and budget meetings aren’t the things that make this brotherhood special, but the things that make our special times possible.

It may be the summer, but you can’t stop the brothers of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia from getting together for fraternal progress! Province 21 has already hosted our annual Leadership Retreat at Robb’s Cabin and it was an absolute blast!

And don’t forget that our Province Governor, Robb, has been out to Lyrecrest a couple of times already for COS and PG Convocation. Here’s a pic from PG Convocation!

To the brothers of Province 21, I would remind you that it would be great to have some stories and pictures to post from those of you going to Leadership Institute and from any chapters hosting summer events. I would love to turn this website into a publication station for our local brothers’ writings about the fraternity. Any chapters who would like to submit writings to be published on this site (and I know I would love to see a lot of them) please e-mail me copies of what you’d like posted at prov21webmaster@gmail.com.

I will be making the final decision as to whether the pieces are appropriate for publication or not.

I hope you all had a great weekend at Province- I envy all of you who were able to go!

Just a friendly reminder to you who actually go to this webpage that Province is a mere week away! I hope you are all ready for a fun-filled weekend. I, sadly, will not be joining you, but I will send my regards and a report for you all.

I’m working on getting an interactive calendar on this site and really making it a place where the whole province can connect (given our being so close now, it shouldn’t be infeasible to visit one another!).

My name is Max Roche and it has been my good fortune to be appointed head of the Technology Committee and, by virtue of that chair, your new Province webmaster. My first “act” was to update our active chapter table, but I do not know the websites (if applicable) of the new chapters to put on this table. As I learn the functions implemented into this website I will better know what I can, should, and am able to do with it and hopefully better ascertain and administer to the needs of you, the Province.

As a short reminder, Province workshop is coming up January 21-23 hosted by Susquehanna University. I hope to see you all there.
